17th Street Causeway,
Fort Lauderdale
FORT
LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA: For years, marina owners in Fort Lauderdale have
used the term "no bridges" to let their customers know that
they would not have to go through a drawbridge to get from the inlet to
their marina. That will all change with the building of the new 17th
Street Causeway bridge:
The 17th Street Causeway
has long been a landmark of Fort Lauderdale and the Florida Inland
Waterway. The bridge has long separated the Fort Lauderdale waterways
from the Port Everglades Inlet, allowing only moderate sized boats
drawbridge-free access to the Inlet or the marinas on the Fort
Lauderdale side of the bridge.
In 1998, the Florida
Department of Transportation began the Causeway bridge project with the
intention of raising the height of the bridge to accommodate larger
boats. The new bridge will increase the vertical clearance from 22 feet
to 55 feet (closed position) and the channel width from 100 feet to 125
feet. The greater height will lessen the number of times the drawbridge
will have to open each day, easing traffic constrictions on busy 17th
Street. The increased width of the channel will allow more boat
traffic under the bridge.
The 17th Street Causeway
bridge uses a Balanced Cantilever Construction to midspan (to the Carina
Pier), and a Progressive Cantilever Construction with a load carrying
tower in the middle section. The approach spans are made up of Twin
Variable Depth - Constant Slope Concrete Segmental Bridges. The cost of
the bridge is $62 million.
The new bridge will be
opened on May 10th, 2000. This will benefit boaters in the Fort
Lauderdale/Miami area, and boaters using the Florida Intracoastal
Waterway.
