The CALIFORNIA DELTA
Northern California's 1000-mile long inland
waterway
Known also as the
Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, The California Delta comprises
approximately 1000 miles of waterways, including the Sacramento and San
Joaquin Rivers. This area is a haven for house boaters and RV travelers,
and boasts over 100 marinas that cater to houseboaters, campers and
fresh water fishermen.

The California Delta is
mostly a rural area, but the cities of Sacramento and Stockton are
situated at the heart of the Delta. There's lots to do in Northern
California besides boating: Fresno is nearby, the vineyards of Sonoma
and Napa counties are within easy driving distance, and San Francisco
and the towns of Silicon Valley are no more than two hours away.
But, if it's boating
you're looking for - especially houseboating - the Delta has all you
need.
Boaters come to the Delta
to spend a lazy weekend motoring up and down the many canals and
waterways, and Delta marinas cater to this crowd. Boat rentals are
available at many marinas, and bait and tackle can be bought along with
boating supplies. On a sunny day you will see waterskiers and
windsurfers on some of the wider rivers and waterways. Flotillas of
anchored boats are also a common sight.
If you're looking to stay
on dry land, there are many fine hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, and
campgrounds in the area. RV camping is popular in the Delta and many
marinas cater to campers by offering camp spaces and RV hookups.
Some believe that the
California Delta offers some of the best freshwater fishing in the
United States. Guides take
charters
up the rivers for sturgeon and striped bass, and offer fishing classes
and seminars throughout the year. The area is known for its huge fishing
tournaments (mostly for bass) that draw thousands of anglers and
spectators to the Delta each year. Two of the more popular areas to fish
for salmon are the American River and the Mokelumne River runs.
Whether it's boating,
camping, touring, or fishing, there's plenty of fun available for the
whole family in the California Delta.
