The KENTUCKY LAKE
COMPLEX
Western Kentucky's
Waterland
In western Kentucky lies
one of America's best inland boating experiences: The Kentucky Lake
Complex. This man-made water system is comprised of Kentucky Lake (184
miles) and Lake Barkley (134 miles), and is connected by a free-flowing
canal. Situated
halfway
between St. Louis and Nashville, the lakes are the perfect spot for
sailing and houseboating, both of which are done by thousands of
tourists a year.
With over 2,300 miles of
shoreline, there are hundreds of bays and inlets for boaters to put
into. There are several marinas
along the lakes which offer boat rentals and slips rentals, and even
sailing schools. And there are local towns to explore, like Grand Rivers
and McKinnon.
The area between Kentucky
Lake and Lake Barkley is known as The Land Between the Lakes (LBL), and was
created in 1963 by John F. Kennedy as a protected "national
recreation area" where people can enjoy the environment and
participate in outdoor activities. This park brings tourists to the area
who combine their outdoor activities with boating and sailing on this
beautiful waterway.
